Is it okay to break up large chunks of quartz crystals into smaller pieces for TBs, or should large chunks be left intact and used in larger orgonite devices?

Any insights much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Dave.
I usually get my rose quartz from a spelunker's rock shop in a nearby town. They sell it by the pound, it's kept in a big bin. The sizes range from thumb-size, fist-size to as big as your head. There are crumb sizes at the bottom of the bin too which I try to pick out bust mostly I get the fist size.
I just bust it up to the size I need. I like RQ and I add it to almost everything I build just 'cause I like it. I put the fine dust in my tbs. When I gifted my ex-wife she gave me in return a HUGE chunk of Rose Quartz, must have weighed 15 lbs or so and was way bigger than my head. I'm still breaking that one up. I don't think the rose quartz minds too much being busted up.. I haven't had any complaints, anyway. Wink

Good grief... Sorry about that brain fart I just had... I thought your were talking about Rose Quartz. So sorry...
I don't know about the plain quartz crystals with with any certainty...
I just don't feel as casual about breaking those up..

Les,
Thanks for sharing your insights, but, yes, I was mainly interested to know if it is okay to break apart chunks of plain quartz crystal. I have a bunch of pieces that are too big for TBs, but if broken up could make a bunch...

Thanks anyhoo!

My personal feeling is that I hate to break up crystal points. I would rather save them for the day I need something bigger. I'm sure if you did smash them up, they would work just fine.

The deal from sensei is great:
CHINESE MINI POINTS/ 1 Lb.= $15.00

Lots of different sizes there.

P.S. I thought you were talking about Rose Quartz too!!! I guess you see what you wanna see! Smile

I know what you mean, DK.

My feeling is that breaking them up is not the best thing, but maybe in a pinch. I'll save those for bigger devices.

Have two pounds of Chinese mini-points on order with Sensei...

Cool

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Here 's what I do with the Chinese mini-points. I pour all of them out on a table and I gather up the larger "matching pairs" and seperate them for later use. Some devices might need somewhat identical crystals.

And you're very welcome. Smile

I know that some people break up quartz crystals. I think the TB will work fine either way. And little crystals used to be part of bigger groups.

Despite all this common sense, I don't like breaking up crystals. Then again, I always ask for willing volunteers from the crystals.

When I did, I found that a vise worked neater than a hammer.

Some places sell bead strands of polished quartz, I got some of these, about 200 beads for $1.50. Seemed to work fine. Surely those beads got busted up somewhere along the line before they got to me. But I'm the kind of guy who will buy a fur coat, but only from a secondhand store. Go figure.

A friend of mind mentioned to my wife the other day that "crystals don't like to be broken" and didn't suggest doing that.

I mentioned this to Don and he said whoever told me that would hate Don because he busts them up all the time to get the right size. To Don, it doesn't matter at all to break up quartz crystals. And I do trust Don like a brother.

Peace,

Fred

. I actually have a device for crushing large crystals into small pieces.
..I ALWAYS felt uncomfortable doing so, and am happy now to have an unlimited supply of small crystals for TBs.
. Crushed crystals seem to work in an energetic sense, just fine. But many folks I have met share the opinion that crushing them seems somehow ...wrong. Though in a pinch , I will.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all your comments. For me, I'll only break them in a pinch... It might be okay to do, but just doesn't feel quite right.

Hi Dave,

I don't break up terminated crystals. I agree that it doesn't feel right. However, we have large chunks of milky quartz that we picked up at a mine site, and those we break up to use the chips for TB's. It works great.

Thanks boney!

Do you think that smooth, roundish (no point) pieces of quartz crystal that are sometimes found in bins of assorted gemstones in some stores are also suitable for TBs?

I have a pouch-full of those at home, but don't really know if they are appropriate.

Points not required on tb crystals from what i've experienced. Your smooth crystals should work just fine.

I can't bring myself to break points so I just buy 50 lbs of crushed crystals to use in tb's and add some of the extra quartz pieces to hhg's.
I always make the 3 oz muffin type tb's with sbb coils.

The crushed quartz can be crushed into a fine powder or smaller pieces. $1.00 a pound isn't so bad for crushed quartz and fifty pounds of quartz can go a long way. I use the better dt and single points for personal gifts and larger creations.

I'll be trying some of your crystals soon Sensei.
