Special thanks to Angel_007 for mentioning this in a sister thread:

http://tor.eff.org/

TOR is an Internet traffic anonymizer which encrypts your traffic and sends it around a random path before reaching its destination, hiding your identity and location in the process.

All you're doing is tellling your web browser (or most any Internet-accessing program like AIM or whatever) to send all its requests and take all its responses through a proxy server, which is the TOR software running on your computer. The TOR proxy encrypts it and sends it around the network of other users.

Another thing you could do is use a different web browser like the kickass Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/) so it stays set up to use the TOR proxy all the time, in case you have any trouble or for some reason want to use the Internet in a less-secure manner, you can do so with your old browser and leave this one set up for secure surfing. Then all you have to do is choose which web browser you open based on your security needs and go.

It doesn't have any kind of pretty graphical user interface yet, but they appear to be working on it. If you can follow instructions, you can install this. I believe everyone here should. Why make it easy for them when we can make it pretty much impossible?

Hi Ryan,

The bit that I've read about Tor makes it seem that there could be some tricks getting it running, and I'm not sure I know enough to be able to deal with contingencies... That's why I hesitate to implement certain things. Any tips?

I printed out the install instructions and followed them step by step. No problems. It (the proxy, I guess) does seem to slow down my dialup connection...but it is gratifying to check my ip address once in a while and see that it's coming from some other onion.

The slowness isn't a show-stopper for me, in Firefox browser the proxy can easily be turned off or on.

Who knows, I may take the plunge and get broadband one of these days anyway. Heck, I hear they are even making cars without carbeuretors these days! :-)

I did back up my registry first, in case things didn't work out and I wanted to undo it.

Big thanks for suggesting this!!
