The Mona Lisa Brand Metallic Powders are stated to be real metal. So you just have to trust that they are not lyng I guess. Found in some art supply places.

I just ordered 100 sheets of 24 karat gold leaf from blue-point-international on eBay who is based out of Thailand. It's around $35 and the sheets are 1.4"x1.4" I'll let you know how it turns out.

One thing I have done is to grind up gold leaf with quartz sand in a mortar and pestle. If you grind enough the gold leaf finally disappears into the sand as its particle size gets smaller and smaller. There won't be the decorative effect of gold leaf, but I think the smaller particle size makes it more active. The smallest gold particle size though is obtained by using aqueous colloidal suspensions of gold which is what was going on with the "Gold Rush" orgonite.

Excellent point and technique about gold particle size.

I'm looking to grind up my gold leaf but keep it still looking like gold. Is it difficult to do? I want to attempt making beads with it so they obviously look like gold still. :-/

I have also been thinking about using goldleaf, would it work to mix the leaves with resin "shredding" it while mixing it with the resin? anyone tried mixing it directly with the resin. (grinding it in air is way to messy)

I also like the idea of grinding it in crystal powder!

It is difficult to work with and getting it to a sort of powder is probably not doeable unless a sharp matrix is included that will keep the tiny pieces from sticking to each other. There is almost nothing there with gold leaf. You find that out when trying to powder it. I just let the microparticles settle out into the sharp quartz sand and leave it at that. Inside hardened rsein there will still be a few gold particles shining amongst the sand particles, but it is not very decorative.

I guess it'll be more difficult to get the gold mixed well into a 1/2" sphere mold than I thought!

I was thinking the other day what if BB's and gold leaf were put in a salt shaker and shook? It could be that smaller flakes of gold leaf would come tumbling out of the holes. Just as likely too that the BB's would become gold plated or the leaf would be adhered to the glass of the shaker.

IT WORKS!

while reading this post about gold leaf, I got a little idea........
bought some gold leaf yesterday and decided to give it a go.
I just mixed it straight away with the resin (dont put hardener in there......yet) , a bit of resin in a little jar, gently put a leaf in there and stir it!
just keep adding leafs and continu to stir, the gold leaf will just become tiny flakes when you mix it this way with resin! I was very happy with the results! the gold leaf is so superthin it just breaks down to small flakes when you mix it in resin.
super easy and no loss of gold!

Good find cutter! Do the particles get small enough so they don't settle?

How about some photos.
What I am trying to do is sprinkle a layer of gold particles onto a resin layer without stirring because I need the gold to stay in one thin layer by itself. I just sprinkle them straight from the little vials, but it is kind of random looking although people kind of like that.

sorry, I dont have a camera at the moment, so many pieces waiting to be photographed!
took it out of the mold this morning, I like it very much!

I mixed it in 10 ml of resin, used 3 leaves (8 times 8 cm)
stirred it for 5 minutes!

I also used the "sprinkle type" leaf before, but pricewise the normal gold leaf is much cheaper and more easy to buy.
also: I used 23.75 carat gold leaf this time and I like the color a lot more to!
it seems so much more spunky than the pieces with the "sprinkle leaf"

@ devmail: sure they do! when you keep stirring they get really small, use a straight stick and straight cup for the resin, and "stir against the wall of the cup with straight stick" that way the particles are also getting smaller.
(I also do this with powders, to get out the occasional lumps of crystal powder)
try not to fold the leaf to much before putting it in resin, I just pick them up with a stirring stick (it sticks to anything)

Cool thanks cutter. I'm hoping this will work for some energetically and aesthetically "blingin" bracelets and beaded necklaces.
