I'm looking for a website for computer users like me who are intelligent but not geeks.

written in very simple language, defining and explaining how to do things safely. and what you could do that you had no idea you could do.

For example, I just found out that there are "throwaway" email addresses you can get for when you have to give your email address to log in to a site but don't trust them with your primary email address. stuff like that.

spyware. antivirus software. whether you really have to buy special markers for writing on your CDs. downloading music. and what's up with file sharing? and of course building a website without spending a lot.

some of the tech sites i look at are a bit over my head, and i figure there must be some place where i can learn this stuff without buying books.. or else i'd be spending a fortune on magic markers for dummies. oh, i guess i'm dating myself. they're not magic anymore. maybe that's the problem.

BTW, I came across another opinion on TOR, just for your information, although I don't know enough about these things to be able to judge..

Karen, that is the opinion of an office network administrator who doesn't want his users to play Quake while they're at work, or anything else that violates their Internet usage policies. It's bad for them. Smile

For a home user, this is an excellent thing and we should ALL start using it immediately, especially to access sites like this one. I didn't know about it until just now (thanks Angel_007!), and I'm going to install it immediately (downloading it now) because I've been waiting for exactly this to come along for years and it finally has. I hope everybody reads this thread.

All you're doing is tellling your web browser (or most any Internet-accessing program like AIM or whatever) to send all its requests and take all its responses through a proxy server, which is the TOR software running on your computer.

Another thing you could do is use a different web browser like the kickass Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/) so it stays set up to use the TOR proxy all the time, in case you have any trouble or for some reason want to use the Internet in a less-secure manner, you can do so with your old browser and leave this one set up for secure surfing.

Thanks for clarifying, Ryan.. it does sound great.

Re. Firefox, I just started using it, and it works better than it used to. I had tried it about a year ago, and then it didn't work well on many sites, but now I have no problem.

That sounds fine and dandy, but what does the corporation called "sneakermail" do with the information they receive regarding spam and where you've been online?
